Marianne Stebenne — Functional and decorative pottery (wood, pit, barrel, gas, electirc and raku/naku firings)
|
|
I began pottery while I was in my late 30's. In 1994 I made my first pot on the wheel at Mudflat Studios in Somerville, MA. Since then I have grown my education in clay as needed at various locations around the country utilizing different venues including: apprenticeships, continuing education, formal education, visiting artist programs, an array of workshops. I enjoy the tactile nature of clay. My senses are aroused by the motion, movement and fluidity of the clay, glaze and the firing process. I enjoy the unity of the clay during the process of making, even though a state of mud there is a definite partnership between the particles through the process. I experience and experiment with various parts of the processes and am amazed by the results when the firing process is over and enjoy each piece as a new creation. I am currently experimenting with the female body form. I make the pieces on the wheel and then alter them by hand and utilizing tools as needed. Depending on my interpretation of each piece, I then fire it in either a primitive pit fire, barrel fire, or a wood fire. Each type of firing gives the piece different looks and allows for different functions. I enjoy the wide range of clay and firing methods and love to experiment. With all of the methods I use in firing these bodies I have a rough idea of what it will turn out as... and enjoy the surprise that comes when I open the kiln and see the finished piece. My studio is open by appointment only outside of the New Bedford Open Studios. |
