Lori Bradley — Ceramics, Monotype printing

I explore my strong connection to landscape through mixed-media art that is contemporary yet references traditional and romantic landscape photography and painting. I explore natural processes such as growth, decay, geological change, and survival interactions between organisms. I sometimes, subtly, use natural processes as metaphors for the interactions of humans. Landscape is always changing yet deserves special care so it can remain hearty and endure.

I like uneasy landscapes, that are beautiful even the midst of stress and transformation. I create contemplative landscapes in which lightness and air of surface connects with the sensuous textures and patterns of the supporting earth underneath.

Personally, I'm inspired by memories of the autumn ritual I had with my mother of taking long hikes in search of plants, leaves and sticks for dried arrangements. My mother encouraged me to look up at the scenery around me but I was more interested in the patterns of leaves, twigs, rocks and small creatures I saw on the ground. I was acutely aware of the unrelenting passage of time, how painfully short our time was to be together, and how the patterns I was observing wouldn't be the same, even if I turned around and walked back on the same path again.

I take frequent walks in the woods, and always have my camera with me to capture a ideal moment of trees, weather and light. In paintings, I use acrylic on wood panels, sometimes layered with photographic monotypes. Multiple layers of paint and medium allow me to slowly build a sensuous and highly textured surface with a translucence that indicates depth. Ceramic pieces are sometimes combined with paint.

I also create a line of dimensional mosaic mirrors with highly textured surfaces depicting the leaves and twigs of the forest floor and the shells and creatures of the seashore. Custom orders are taken for mirrors. I can work with you to match color and size to architectural specifications.
