My work can be best described as abstract landscape with an emphasis on space and structure. The work has little representational imagery aside from some shapes that suggest windows, arches or other architectural elements. My memory of landscapes becomes more important than working from life because I am trying to capture an essence of place, rather than an actual landscape depiction.

Many of the pieces contain multiple layers of drawing, paper and transparencies to build up the surface and create something that is object-like. I am interested in the contrast between extreme warm, intense colors and darker, more shadowy areas. The mood that results from this kind of atmosphere can be inviting but also mysterious and ominous at times, as though the viewer is completely alone. The work often gives the feeling of a vast expanse, as though the viewer is a tiny speck within the world.
