David Baggarly — Oil painting, Drawing, Monoprint, Collograph

My work tends to be about intersections and interactions, often, those of opposites or distinct differences . . . the divine with the human; "darkness and light"; spiritual and material; the ancient with the modern; the abstract with the narrative. These juxtapositions, combinations, ironies, and co-existences are what, when, and where we live.

My work is inspired by both religious icon painting (of the early Christian, Byzantine, and middle ages), and my love of modern painting. The aesthetics and intentions of these icons; interactions between the two dimensional design/decoration with the stylized representational/narrative painting, and, the symbology sprung from the spirituality and devotion to Christ (most of which I share) of the iconographic traditions; delight, fascinate, and resonate with me. Modern and Abstract painting also evokes such delight, fascination, and resonance within me. It is, in a way, a true representation of even the material world we've been discovering in this age, and provides a limitless freedom of individual expression, perfect for representation of the see-able and unsee-able alike.
