Fridgecouch - 'The Concept'
As it happened, I was in need of some stylish outdoor seating for a wedding, that would encourage guests to relax and inter-mingle, breaking free from the typical cliquey wedding scene. It had to live up to the union of a creative couple, and it had to be free of cost. Having spent years keeping used cars alive, and with an in-born knack for fixing, I set off on a regular trip to the auto wreck-yard to find some parts for my car. While perusing hundreds of junked cars, I came across a very tired BMW two door coupe. I pried open the door and couldn't believe my eyes.....cherry red leather interiors, and the back seat was practically new! How within this wreck of a vehicle could such a beautiful seat remain? Of course! It occurred to me that back-seats see almost no use, commuting around behind a single conductor for most of their life. I had a foundation for my concept. Well, the hardest part was taken care of; I had beautiful red leather, German engineered comfort, and a price I could afford. Now I just needed something to put it in the would be live up to this new-found beauty! I lay in bed that night my mind racing through the possibilities........what was the same size as a car seat, had a modern sleek aesthetic and could be found at the dump? A classic 'Corbusier' design was fixated in my mind. Maybe a refrigerator? Could it be possible? I set off for the dump the next morning. The July sun shined brightly that exciting morning on the body of a near perfect olive green refrigerator, light gleaming curiously off a vintage chromed label on the freezer door. I pulled out the tape measure.....52 inches inside, top to bottom. The seat would fit with a half an inch to spare. Fridgecouch born! Three years and three Fridgecouch designs later, I still find myself completely absorbed in the energy that people bring me when they experience something new and unexpected. Life is a funny thing? You just never know where it will take you, or what you will find. Fridgecouch has become a purpose for me, a chance to bring recycling to people in a way they never imagined. But it's only the beginning. Design never stops, and where there's a will there's always a way. Designer Background
